WHO TRAINS HERE
Not sure which one fits? Call the academy and we’ll point you at the right class.
Class packs, memberships, and private coaching are all on the membership page. Or see the full week before you book a class.
Membership optionsWHAT YOU’RE ACTUALLY DOING
No-gi means no uniform to buy. You train in shorts and a rash guard, gripping the body rather than the cloth, the way modern grappling and MMA are practised.
There is no striking, and intensity is something you and your partner set together. That is why adults with no athletic background start in their thirties, forties and fifties and keep training for years.
The rest is physical problem-solving: leverage, timing and position against someone who is genuinely resisting. You get better by doing it, with a coach correcting you as you go.
Two classes a week is enough to make steady progress. Come once and see.
HOW A CLASS RUNS
No warm-up. No drilling a sequence on a partner who lets you. From the first round to the last you are working against someone who is genuinely resisting.
Two rounds. Both of you start on the feet, working for the grip, the angle and the way down.
Two rounds. One of you is playing guard and the other is passing it, then you swap.
Two rounds. One of you holds the pin and works to improve it while the other works to escape.
One to three rounds with the whole game open, from standing to the tap or the buzzer.
Seven to nine live six-minute rounds in a sixty-minute class. Your coach sets the constraint for each round and adjusts it to the pair in front of him, so a first-timer and a purple belt get the same task at the difficulty each of them needs.
THE METHOD
CLA is the Constraints-Led Approach: a modern training and coaching method rooted in ecological dynamics.
Instead of memorizing a long sequence and repeating it, you get a starting position, a goal and a live opponent. Your coach changes the constraint, the grip, the position, the time, the objective, so that the solution you need is the one you keep running into.
You learn the same jiujitsu every academy teaches, but you learn it inside the situation you will actually use it in. That is why it holds up the first time somebody resists, rather than falling apart the moment the round starts.
