Comparison
Gi vs no-gi: what actually differs.
Gi jiu jitsu is trained in a heavy cotton kimono with a belt, giving both people fabric to grip. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, so all control comes from grips on the body. The positions are the same; the mechanics of holding them are not.
Grips: cloth versus body
This is the whole difference, and everything else follows from it. The gi gives you sleeves, collars, lapels and pant cuffs — durable handles that let you steer someone from a distance and hold a position while you think.
No-gi gives you underhooks, wrist control, head and arm ties, and body locks. They demand closer contact and constant adjustment. A gi player can stall a match with two strong grips; a no-gi player usually cannot.
Pace and the shape of a round
Gi rounds tend to be slower and more positional, with long grip-fighting exchanges before anything moves. No-gi rounds are usually faster, with more scrambles, more wrestling on the feet and more transitions per minute.
Neither is objectively more technical. They just tax different things — gi rewards patience and grip strength, no-gi rewards timing, body pressure and the ability to recover position in motion.
Which should you start with?
Start with whichever the academy near you actually teaches on the nights you can attend. That single practical constraint outweighs the theory almost every time.
If you have a genuine choice: the gi's slower grips give a beginner a little more thinking time, while no-gi skips the whole apparatus of learning to use a uniform and gets you straight to controlling a person. People who cross-train say the skills transfer both ways within a few weeks.
Common questions
Will training only no-gi hold me back?
For general skill, no. If you intend to compete in gi tournaments you will eventually need gi mat time, because grip fighting in the jacket is its own skill set that no-gi does not build.
Is no-gi better for self-defence or MMA?
It maps more directly, since neither situation involves a thick jacket. That said, gi grips resemble grabbing a jacket or shirt, so gi training is not irrelevant.
Do belts still matter in no-gi?
Yes. You do not wear one on the mat in no-gi, but your rank still describes your experience and is used in tournament divisions.
